A letter to the youth of the Society of Saint Vincent de
Paul(성 빈첸시오 아 바오로회 청년협의회 회원들에게)

“I write to you, the young, because you have defeated the
Evil one”(“ 나는 젊은이 여러분들이 악의 세력을 물리쳤기에 이 편지를 씁니다.”)
I wish to open this first message to you, the young members
of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, with the words of
the apostle John in his first letter (2,13). It surely took
a great deal of courage for a young man or woman in the times
of saint John to become a Christian and trying to live as
such in a pagan world. He or she had certainly defeated the
Evil one upon receiving baptism and in trying to live in accordance
with its demands. No other was the case with saint John himself,
called by Jesus to follow Him in his early youth. (여러분에게 드리는
이 글을 우선, 사도 요한의 첫번째 서간(2,13)의 말씀으로 시작하고 싶습니다. 그당시 사도 요한이 살았던
시대에 젊은이들이 크리스쳔이 된다는 것은 매우 어려운 일이었습니다. 그들은 하느님을 받아들여서 세례를 받고
하느님의 말씀에 응답하는 삶을 살게 됨으로써 악의 세력을 물리치게 되었던 것입니다. 요한 사도 자신도 젊은
시절에 하느님의 부름을 받아들임으로써 그러했습니다..)
No other was the case either with Frederic Ozanam and his
friends co-founders of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul
in the 19th century. Theirs was again a practically pagan
world, especially the academic world of their youth. But once
again they defeated the Evil one with the same arms of the
early Christian youth: a life built upon the rock of their
faith in Christ and a consequent practice of His teachings,
which are summed up in one: love of God and neighbor. (19세기의
프레드릭 오자남과 빈첸시오회의 공동 설립자들도 젊은 시절에 하느님의 부름을 받았습니다. 그 당시 시대적인
배경은 불신이 넘치고 학문적인것에 대한 추구가 더 우위에 있던 시기 였습니다. 그렇지만 그들은 이러한 불신을
물리치고 믿음으로 단단히 무장을 한 후 바위와 같은 굳센 신앙을 가지고 하느님과 이웃사랑의 실천을 보여
주었습니다. )
Almost two thousand years have elapsed since saint John wrote
his first letter; yet we still find ourselves in a world which
so frequently looks and acts as a pagan (even when baptized)
world. Once again, trying to live like a Christian in such
a world demands a great deal of courage, as in the early times
of the Church and in the early times of the Society of Saint
VIncent de Paul. (요한 사도가 이 편지를 쓴 지 2000여년이라는 세월이 흘렀지만 우리는
여전히 불신이 팽배한 시대에 살고 있습니다. 그러므로 이러한 시대에 신앙인으로 살아간다는 것은 초기 교회때나
빈첸시오회가 처음 설립된 때와 마찬가지로 매우 힘든 일입니다. )
The apostle John did not seem to think, as some people do,
that trying to live like a true Christian was in his time
beyond the capacity of a young man or of a young woman. Quite
the contrary. Says he: “I have written to you, the young,
because you are strong, and the word of God remains in you”
(2,14). The word of God, not age, is what makes a man or a
woman strong. (그러나, 요한 사도는 대부분의 사람들이 생각하는 것처럼 젊은이들이 신앙인으로
살아가는 것이 힘든 일이라고 생각하지 않았습니다. 오히려 그는 다음과 같이 말했습니다. “젊은이 여러분들은
강하고, 하느님께서 여러분과 함께 하시기 때문에 이 편지를 씁니다.”(2,14) 사람을 강하게 만드는 것은
나이가 아니라 하느님말씀입니다.)
